Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Capsule by Joshua Katzman

From the Chicago Reader

In Guillermo del Toro's sequel to his Hellboy (2004), the big red guy (Ron Perlman) tries to thwart a renegade elfin prince (Luke Goss) who plans to violate a long-standing truce with mankind by resurrecting a dormant army of gigantic metal warriors. Del Toro's previous film, the complex, visually arresting Pan's Labyrinth (2006), demonstrated his growth as a filmmaker, and though the themes here aren't as profound, the striking set design and use of nonhuman characters carry over, culminating in a funny, offbeat superhero flick. Based on the comic books by Mike Mignola; with Selma Blair as the hero's combustible love interest, Doug Jones as his sidekick, and Jeffrey Tambor. PG-13, 110 min.

This movie is currently playing at: Univ. of Chicago Doc Films
