Follow the Fleet
To keep the Astaire-Rogers cycle going, they had to work as many variations on the basic plot as possible. This one seemed a good idea: reversing the usual conventions, making Astaire a gum-chewing sailor on shore leave and Rogers a dance-hall hostess. It seemed like a good idea, but it wasn't--especially when the whole aura of Continental chic floods back in for the final number, "Let's Face the Music and Dance." The pace is all wrong--as is the other older couple, Randolph Scott and Harriet Hilliard (Arlene Croce says they go together like red whiskey and Seconal). Music is by Irving Berlin, though. |
